Is the VINT data protocol open or closed source?

I am curious if you have or if you plan to release details about the VINT data interface so we can communicate with phidgets directly from other microprocessors or create phidgets of our own that are recognized by the hub. Or is that something you try to discourage? Thanks?

It's a closed protocol. We're not prepared or equipped to handle the support issues for user-created VINT devices, as these would have to emulate existing Phidgets to have any hope of working with the library.
As for communicating directly with VINT devices from an Arduino or something - again, we can't really offer any support in this case. I can't stop you from reversing engineering the protocol, but I'd definitely not recommend it - it's not a simple protocol, you have to get the handshake and timing right.
