Running Java with Phidgets on Raspberry Pi 3

How do I connect my phidget sensor to a raspberry pi 3? So far I am able to connect to it with netbeans and run some basic applications, however I can't seem to get it to work with phidget. When I run a java program including phidget, it says it cant find the .so file in the LD_Library_Path, however I see the .so file under /usr/lib. If you can help that would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
