Rotary Motion Guide
Rotary systems involve rotating mechanical parts such as motors, sprockets, and pulleys. Learn the basics about rotary motion here.

This shaft is made of 1045 carbon steel, precision ground to exactly 17mm, and chrome plated. The production process is the same as linear shaft - except the shaft is not case hardened, allowing you to easily drill and machine the shaft.
17mm is one of the 'core' shaft diameters in our mechanical product line - in addition to 8mm, 12mm and 25mm. 17mm is a great diameter for higher power belt transmissions (GT5), #40 chain systems.
We also sell the 17mm shaft with a full length keyway.
If you need to connect this shaft to a motor or another device with a shaft, you can use a shaft coupler:
Product | Physical Properties | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Part Number | Price | Inner Diameter | Material | Coupling Rated Torque | Coupling Rated Speed |
Jaw Coupling Half 17mm Series 24
|
$6.85 | 17 mm | Aluminum | 611.8 kg·cm | 4000 RPM |
Jaw Coupling Half 17mm Series 38
|
$7.40 | 17 mm | Aluminum | 3.3 Mg·cm | 4000 RPM |
If you're using a rotary system that requires a lot of torque, you may be interested in pulleys and sprockets. By using a two pulleys or sprockets of different sizes, you can increase the gear ratio of the system. Pulleys and sprockets can also be used to transmit rotation over a long distance. For more guidance on building a transmission system, visit our Rotary Motion Guide. Here is a list of our 17mm bore pulleys and sprockets:

Systems with heavy loads or pulley/sprocket assemblies often put a lot of sideways strain on the shaft. In such a system, you can use rotary bearings to protect and support the shaft:
